Psychiatrist Job Description
Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and emotional disorders. Psychiatrists also act as consultants for other physicians.
Typical Job Duties
• Assess patients on an individual basis
• Create care plans which include treatments ranging from individual or group therapy sessions to medication
• Provide therapy to outpatients and their families
• Liaise with hospital staff to discuss treatment plans and patient progress
• Diagnose and treat mental health emergencies in hospital emergency rooms
• Speak to various organizations and community groups regarding mental health issues
• Serve on committees to promote and maintain mental health services and delivery systems in their communities
