What is an Archivist?

 

Archivist Job Description

Archivists are responsible for appraising, acquiring, describing, preserving and facilitating access to records that have a permanent value. They work with records throughout their entire lifecycle, and oversee their disposal or retention in an archive.

 

 

Job Duties

• Oversee and provide advice about the development of reliable record making and record keeping systems        

• Supervise and direct the work of graduate students, interns, assistant and other personnel

• Generate public awareness of the records by conducting outreach activities

• Authenticate records and their production

• Design and direct research projects related to archived records

• Develop and manage preservation systems for digital records

• Facilitate access to records by arranging and describing them properly

• Locate, acquire and preserve valuable records and perform subsequent research
