Drama Therapist Job Description

Drama therapists are responsible for using performing arts to promote the psychological, physical, emotional and social development of individuals.

Drama therapists use a variety of approaches with clients, including stories, puppetry, improvisation, drama and movement to allow clients to explore their past experiences and express themselves in a way that might be easier than directly talking about it.

Typical Job Duties

• Receive referrals from other health care professionals

• Initiate the spontaneous exploration of personal issues

• Encourage clients to discuss their issues in a manner which is comfortable to them

• Use appropriate equipment, materials and therapeutic 'props', such as puppets and other objects

• Enable clients to develop new ways of thinking and behaving

• Encourage self-awareness, exploration and reflection on feelings and relationships

• Prepare reports concerning techniques used and client progression

• Maintain comprehensive client records, including progress reports
