Proofreaders must ensure that texts due for publication are well written, grammatically correct and accessible. They may also be responsible for correcting basic spelling, typographical and grammatical errors or checking facts.

 

Proofreaders can work on a variety of publications, such as books, journals, magazine, newspapers and online resources. 

 

 

Typical Job Duties

• Oversee the work of indexers, typesetters and designers

• Ensure that illustrations contain the proper captions

• Create artwork briefs that detail the content of illustrations

• Work from paper manuscripts or computer based publishing systems

• Liaise regularly with authors and publishers

• May correct spelling mistakes and grammatical errors

• Assist production team by coding manuscripts for design features, such as hierarchy of headings

• Discus any sections that may be legally problematic with the authors or editors

• Work with a style checklist to ensure consistency in hyphenation, capitalization, formatting of references, etc.
