Police Officer Job Description

Police officers are responsible for maintaining law and order within a municipality in order to protect the public. Police officers must detect and prevent crimes, detain criminals and enforce laws.

Typical Job Duties

• Patrol assigned areas in order to detect and prevent crimes

• Investigate crimes and accidents

• Secure evidence

• Arrest individuals who are suspected of committing a crime

• Take notes and prepare reports on cases

• Provide testimony in a court of law

• Interview witnesses, suspects and people of interest

• Provide emergency assistance to victims of accidents, crimes and natural disasters

• May supervise the work of other police officers

• Participate in the delivery of community crime awareness and safety programs

• May use specialty equipment such as radar machines and equipment used to detain or immobilize a criminal
