Medical Social Worker Job Description
Medical Social workers are responsible for making community resources available to individuals or groups who are affected by chronic illness or trauma.
Typical Job Duties
• Perform grief work with families affected by the death of a loved one
• Research resources for stress relief for those providing care for the terminally ill as well as the mentally or physically handicapped
• Make community resources available to help reduce or eliminate the long-term effects of an illness to ensure optimal levels of independence and health
• Perform clinical assessments of individual clients who are in crisis and provide counseling to mitigate the effects of the crisis upon the client and their family
• Counsel substance abusers after they have started their treatment in hospital
• Develop treatment plans for substance abusers upon hospital discharge
