Marriage Counselor Job Description
Marriage counselors diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders within the context of marriage. Marriage counselors apply psychotherapeutic and family systems theories and techniques for the purpose of treating such mental and emotional disorders.
Typical Job Duties
• Provide education and consultation to other professionals or groups regarding counseling methods, issues and services
• Meet with clients to gain thorough understanding of their marriage and its problems or issues
• Write evaluations of spouses, parents and families for use by courts for the purpose of deciding court cases
• Follow up on the results of a counseling program
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to address marital problems
• Encourage individuals to develop and use strategies and skills for confronting marital and emotional issues in a positive manner
• Maintain case files which include progress notes and any treatments suggested or used
• Help clients obtain legal and financial assistance by providing information on how to do so
