Family Counselor Job Description
Family counselors seek to help families resolve their difficulties and develop stronger relationships by providing counseling services.
Typical Job Duties
• Identify the causes of the family’s issues, such as abuse, addiction, stress, absence, mental health problems or other
• Assist clients in adapting their train of thought and behaviours by asking questions of an inflective nature
• Help clients identify, express and manage feelings and behaviour in a healthy manner
• Refer clients to other professionals and resources as needed
• Teach parents age appropriate and effective parenting techniques
• Assist families in identifying their current relationship strengths, skills and resources
• Assist families in identifying, confronting and resolving their problems, while ensuring to do so in a constructive manner
• Maintain detailed client files and confidentiality
