Judges are responsible for arbitrating disputes of a legal nature, as well as advising counsel, jury, litigants, and court personnel. They ensure that hearings and trials are conducted in a fair manner, and ensure the proper rules and procedures of the court are followed.

 

 

Typical Duties Within the Job

• Establish rules of procedure on questions for which there are no standard procedures

• Determine the sufficiency of the allegations made by a plaintiff in a civil suit

• Examine the evidence pertaining to criminal charges in order to determine if it will support the charges

• Settle disputes among opposing attorneys

• Listen to presentations of case

• Rule on admissibility of evidence and methods of conducting testimony

• Sentence defendant in criminal cases, on conviction by jury, according to statutes of regional or federal government

• Award judicial relief to litigants in civil cases in relation to findings by jury or by court

• Instruct jury on applicable law

• Direct jury to deduce facts from evidence presented
