Human Rights Officer Job Description
A human rights officer is responsible for monitoring, reporting and attempting to redress violations of human rights, as defined by the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Typical Job Duties
• Identify human rights violations
• Receive and investigate complaints of human rights, for such abuses as discrimination of minorities or women, unjust imprisonment, violence against children and religious intolerance
• Gather information and facts surrounding human rights violations
• Interview victims and perpetrators of human rights violations
• Observe demonstrations, trials and elections
• May intervene with local authorities on behalf of victims
• Liaise with other organizations, such as the International Labour Organization, United Nations Children's Fund and the International Criminal Court
