Lexicographer Job Description

Lexicographers compile definitions of words in a structured manner for the purpose of writing, editing and publishing dictionaries. They must take into consideration such factors as the usages and meaning of words when composing definitions.

Bilingual lexicographers translate words and expressions from one language to another, rather than providing definitions.

Typical Job Duties

• Check and proofread modern and historical text and other sources of information

• Identify and define new words that are in common usage for inclusion in the dictionary

• Review existing definitions in strict compliance with previously agreed upon protocols

• Liaise with editors
