News Editor Job Description
News editors are responsible for overseeing the content that composes a news publication. They must assign stories to reporters and photographers, edit content and write or approve headlines.
News editors may work for newspapers, magazines and websites.
Typical Job Duties
• Pay close attention to the happenings in their coverage area
• Monitor police scanners and police blotters
• Inform reporters and other editors as to what needs to be covered for each edition
• Ensure that clear instructions are given to reporters
• Review, edit and approve or disapprove stories that reporters and news writers have prepared
• Oversee content layout of publication
• React to events that occur without warning, such as a traffic accident or the firing of a city official
