Screenwriter Job Description

Screenwriters are responsible for developing original scripts for film productions. They may either create original stories or adapt stories written by others, such as novelists.

Typical Job Duties

• Brainstorm ideas for screenplays

• Perform thorough research of subject matter

• May liaise with producers to obtain rights to stories written by others

• Liaise with producers, directors and editors to ensure screenplay development timelines are adhered to

• May be required to revise screenplay multiple times during filming due to budgetary constraints, changes in cast, changes in creative vision or other factors

• Prepare 'shooting script' that contains instructions regarding the shots, lighting and camera angles
