Songwriter Job Description

Songwriters write lyrics for songs and may be involved in creating the melody as well. They may write songs for events, artists, film, television or advertisements.

Typical Job Duties

• May write just the lyrics for a melody that someone else has composed

• Rework lyrics or melody numerous times in order to create a marketable product

• May record demos of song at home or in a professional studio

• May hire musicians to assist with recording a demo

• In order to market their work, songwriters may ask recording company representatives and music publishers to attend live performances

• Distribute demos by delivering them to performers, recording company representatives or publishing them on the internet
