Being a student presents many challenges in your job search, the first being a lack of experience. But don't let that intimidate you, many students and new graduates find themselves with an excess of education and a shortfall of experience, yet most of them get jobs! Here are some helpful resume tips to get you started.
Be Posting Specific - All too often applicants are sloppy on their job applications and with their resumes. They are applying for multiple jobs and don't want to put in the effort to create something that is tailor made to the specific position that the resume is being sent. Be sure to include any and all relevant skills that the employer says they are looking for.
Be Honest - Nothing will destroy your interview faster than being caught in a lie.
Proofread - If an employer finds a spelling mistake, you're dead in the water (did you catch that spelling mistake?...good, hopefully your proofreader is as sharp as you are).
Apply Direct - Find the appropriate contact (usually a manager, HR representative), if you're not sure and the posting doesn't mention any specific names or application methods, make sure to ask who the hiring manager is, and you will be pointed in the right direction.
Follow up - After you have applied, make sure to follow up a few days later, (hopefully with the hiring manager you spoke with directly earlier). This will keep you on the employer's mind and may be the difference between you and an equally suitable candidate.
