It happens all of the time, people quit their jobs, or get fired, and need to find new work; you’re definitely not alone if you’re in the thick of a job hunt. You drop off a few applications and BAM! An interview! That’s great news! You show up for the interview, tense as you’ve ever been, when the first thing that comes out of the interviewer’s mouth is, “So, why are you looking to quit your current job?” Were you ready for that question? You probably were; you probably have a whole mess of reasons why you’re leaving, but what are you going to say?? You shouldn’t lie, but you should tell them why without making yourself look like an employment risk.
Here are a few appropriate responses for that inevitable interview question:
“I spend a significant amount of time commuting to and from work every day; I would prefer to work closer to home.”
“The company was cutting back, and unfortunately my job was one of those that was eliminated.”
“I believe this position is an excellent match for my skills and experience, and I am not able to fully utilize them in my current position.”
“After several years at my current job, I am looking for a company in which I can contribute ideas and further my professional growth.”
“I am interested in pursuing an opportunity that offers a greater level of responsibility.”
“My current employer does not offer room for growth, and I am interested in continuing my professional development with an organization in which there is room for advancement.”
“I have recently received my degree/diploma/certificate, and would like to utilize my educational background in my new position.”
“I’m looking for a bigger challenge and to grow my career; I thought I couldn’t job hunt part-time while working. It didn’t seem ethical to use my former employer’s time.”
“I’ve decided to take my career in a new direction, and my current employer has no suitable opportunities.”
