In our previous blog posts about the hidden job market, we've mentioned how to contact employers in your field who may be hiring without the general public being aware of it. If you are having trouble finding employers in your field, here are a few methods that you can apply to help you with your search.
Personal Networking is a great way to find information on companies who are hiring. Did you know that networking is the method most used by employers to fill vacancies? Conversely, it is the method least used by job seekers! People with whom you choose to network can include: friends, relatives of friends, teachers, professors, previous employers, teammates, coaches, classmates or relatives. It can also include potential employers you wish to work for. Speaking with these people can, and often does, provide you with job leads or information pertaining to job leads. The more people you contact and speak with regarding job leads, the better your chances of finding work.
Directories are another great resource for students and graduates who are seeking hidden employment. Directories such as the Yellow Pages will offer headings for companies who are active in your chosen industry. You can also do a simple internet search by keyword or location to find a potential employer within your desired industry or field.
Mentoring: Your college or university Career Services Office, or possibly your local Chamber of Commerce may have a mentoring program designed to align you with a mentor from your chosen industry. These individuals can provide you with guidance for your chosen career path.
Networking through Associations & Memberships within your chosen field will provide you with the ability to interact with individuals with common career interests and purposes. Joining a network can also be great for your resume by showing employers you are serious about pursuing a career within your field of interest. Because of the costs often associated with such associations and memberships, only those who are serious about that field should consider joining them. Seminars, workshops, trade shows and meetings are great platforms for this type of networking.
By using some or all of these methods, your list of employers to contact will grow substantially.
